The GreenLean™ Construction process has received the “Utah Energy Champion” award from the State of Utah and Energy Star! Not just any home can be GreenLean™; it has to be designed into the plans. The GreenLean™ construction process uses much less lumber and has less construction waste so there is a much smaller environmental footprint from each GreenLean™ home.

Thermal Break Walls

One of the main sources of heat loss in a building is heat transfer. This is where hot or cold air transfers through an object such as windows or the insulated perimeter walls of a home. Adding a thermal break provides a buffer from this heat loss and dramatically reduces this heat transfer. Insulation restricts this transfer far better than lumber.

The standard GreenLean™ system maximizes the lumber to insulation ratio. However, for those that want the absolute most in performance, GreenLean™ has also developed an advanced Thermal Break wall! This upgraded wall utilizes the award winning GreenLean™ principles and adds a thermal break built right into the wall itself. The cost difference for the Thermal Break wall is surprisingly minimal, so make sure to select which wall you prefer in your home when purchasing your GreenLean™ plan.

Cut the fat!

Just as muscles occupy less space than fat in the human body, GreenLean™ cuts the fat of unnecessary lumber in the exterior envelope to make a leaner, more energy efficient home! Along with cutting fat in the body, muscles also strengthen… and so do the walls of a GreenLean™ home!

Fewer studs allow for more insulation which provides more energy efficiency. And walls are strengthened with our thermal break walls in the same token!

A GreenLean™ home also cuts the fat in lumber waste. It is designed to maximize the use of each piece of lumber to nearly eliminate lumber waste from the exterior envelope on the building.

Lumber takeoffs are more efficient and lean when followed correctly. The following areas are given special “GreenLean™” attention in our designs:

The HERS index

The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is a scoring system established by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) in which a home built to the specifications of the HERS Reference Home (based on the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code) scores a HERS Index of 100, while a net zero energy home scores a HERS Index of 0. The lower a home’s HERS Index, the more energy efficient it is in comparison to the HERS Reference Home.

Each 1-point decrease in the HERS Index corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption compared to the HERS Reference Home. GreenLean™ goes beyond the typical HERS upgrades of insulation & HVAC and designs energy savings directly into the plans themselves. Thus a GreenLean™ home with a HERS Index of 65 is 35% more energy efficient than the HERS Reference Home!

This is an image depicting the savings of a home with a Home Energy Rating (HERS) rating of 70. Every GreenLean™ home has a HERS rating of 65 or less vs. a rating of 80 or above for many competitor’s homes. The use of less exterior studs combined with increased insulation value equates to reduced heat loss transfer and more insulation. Virtually NO heat loss is found in our GreenLean™ Thermal Break walls.
